Mechanical Engineering is an engineering discipline that involves the application of principles of physics for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems.

Mechanical engineers design and build engines and power plants, structures and vehicles of all sizes. It requires a solid understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics and energy. Mechanical engineers use the core principles as well as other knowledge in the field to design and analyse motor vehicles, aircraft, heating and cooling systems, watercraft, manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, robotics, medical devices and more.

The undergraduate courses in mechanical engineering at University of Tabriz were established in 1968 to provide students with knowledge of the basic laws and principles underlying engineering science and to teach them how to use their knowledge. Some 80 students enter the department each year. In 1979, the M.Sc. courses were also established at this department in Energy Conversion Systems and a few years later in Applied Design. Recently the another M.Sc. disciplines known as Vehicle Power Systems, Aerospace and energy systems have been established in this department.

6 workshops including Machine Tools, Grinding, Welding, Milling, Auto Mechanics and Molding and 12 laboratories consists of Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Turbo-machinery, Heat Transfer, Heat Engines, Vibration and Strength of Materials, Composite Materilas, Casting, Photoelasticity, Hydraulic and Pneumatic, Steam Machine, and Modern Controls are in use all enjoying educational and research capabilities. In 1997, the first Ph.D. student graduated from this department. At present, nearly 310 students in M.Sc. and 93 students in Ph.D. are studying at the Mechanical Engineering Department.
